NYC restaurateur Keith McNally has revealed the A-list movie star who was as soon as “incredibly rude” to one in all his servers, prompting them to burst into tears.
McNally, who owns greater than a dozen hotspot eateries in Manhattan — together with Balthazar’s, Pastis and Minetta Tavern — recalled when he labored as a basic supervisor on the iconic One Fifth restaurant within the Seventies.
In an excerpt obtained by New York Journal’s Grub Avenue of his upcoming memoir, “I Regret Almost Everything: A Memoir,” McNally named and shamed singer Patti Smith, who had frequented the Italian eatery, which closed down for good in February.
McNally revealed that the “Because the Night” singer typically dined on the hotspot together with her then-boyfriend, photographer Robert Mapplethorpe.
The duo was typically joined by Mapplethorpe’s ex, Sam Wagstaff, who had lived in an condominium above the Italian joint.
“Smith and Mapplethorpe could be very difficult to wait on,” McNally wrote.
“Smith, unfortunately, was incredibly rude to the servers. It’s impossible for me to listen to a Patti Smith song today without remembering her reducing a waitress to tears because she forgot to put bread on the table,” he claimed.
Nevertheless, McNally famous that Mapplethorpe had “never tried to belittle” waitstaff, in contrast to the 4-time Grammy nominee.
The excerpt prompted a number of different social media customers to share their experiences of crossing paths with the singer, 78.
“He’s not lying about Patti Smith,” one particular person wrote within the feedback part of New York Journal’s Instagram publish. “I witnessed her rudeness years ago at working a banquet.”
“The Patti Smith is rude to servers comment just broke my heart,” one other wrote, whereas a 3rd added that they had been “shocked” to be taught Smith wasn’t pleasant to servers.
Nonetheless, some individuals rushed to the singer’s protection.
“I know people who have spent time with her in the past few years and she was sweet as could be… I guess she’s mellowed… or that waiter was very sensitive,” one particular person wrote.
One other added, “Your comment about Patti is disturbing. She was always down to earth and lovely when we worked together or met via Sony Music. Did you ever discus [sic] it with her? Lord knows I’ve had my bad moments.”
The Put up has reached out to Smith’s reps for remark.
In 2022, McNally made headlines after he sensationally banned James Corden from eating at his NYC restaurant, Balthazar, following the British comic’s boorish habits towards employees.
