“Best trail running in the universe.”
“My wife and I hiked on the SR Trail on our honeymoon. Everyone should be able to do that! Most beautiful place….”
“Yay!”
These are some of the reactions to the news this week that the Steep Ravine Trail, a scenic and popular path through Mount Tamalpais State Park, is back in business after four or five months of closure. The state park announced the reopening Wednesday on Facebook:
Strike up the band! Shout it from East Peak! Do a happy dance in a safe location (happy dancing on the trail may result in serious injury)!
THE STEEP RAVINE TRAIL IS OPEN!!!
A million thanks to our hard-working trail crews (CA State Parks Bay Area District trail crew, MTSP trail volunteers, and CCC crews) who toiled through foul weather and a variety of setbacks in order to finish work today. We really appreciate all you have done!
Thank you also to the Friends of Mt Tam and everyone who pitched in to their fundraising efforts. We couldn’t have done it this fast without all of you!
Steep Ravine is a shady, contemplative jaunt through a redwood ecosystem with lush ferns, burbling waterfalls and a famous ladder. It also crosses – or can be made part of a side journey along – the Dipsea Trail, a gorgeous trek up and down punishing slopes to Stinson Beach. It closed down due to several bridges needing to be shored up or replaced. Then, just as it was about to reopen at the end of March, a redwood tree fell down on one of them.
And now it’s open again – right in time for the lovely, warm hiking weather this weekend. Here are some more photos the state park shared of the refurbished trail:
