Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum claimed Monday that she reached a cope with President Trump to halt the imposition of 25% tariffs for one month in change for concessions on the border.
Sheinbaum stated that Mexico agreed to strengthen the US-Mexico border with 10,000 personnel from Mexico’s Nationwide Guard to assist crack down on fentanyl dissemination into the US. Each Sheinbaum and Trump held a name Monday morning.
The US will then work with Mexico to Forestall the trafficking of weapons into America’s southern neighbor.
“We had a good conversation with President Trump with great respect for our relationship and sovereignty; we reached a series of agreements,” Sheinbaum stated in an announcement, per a translation.
“Our teams will begin working today on two fronts: security and trade,” she added. “They are pausing tariffs for one month from now.”
Trump had ordered a 25% across-the-board tariff on Mexico after accusing the southern neighbor of failing to fulfill his calls for of addressing the fentanyl and unlawful immigration crises.
