MIAMI — Bryce Montes de Oca’s surgery to remove loose bodies from his elbow revealed a more significant issue.
According to the Mets, the right-handed reliever’s ulnar collateral ligament was deemed “insufficient” and needed to be “revised.”
In more basic terms, Montes de Oca underwent Tommy John surgery.
The hard-throwing Montes de Oca had an impressive spring training for the Mets before he was shut down about midway through camp with forearm discomfort.
Last season, the 26-year-old Montes de Oca appeared in three games for the Mets and posted a 10.80 ERA.
He was considered part of the team’s bullpen depth for this season before his surgery Wednesday.
