New York, NY – Li Tang Gallery is excited to announce its latest online exhibition “Fiction Beyond Nonfiction” available for the public to view through the gallery’s website. Bringing together a diverse set of artists from around the world, this show shares unique perspectives on the evolving nature of digital technologies in relation to each artist’s distinctive practices and mediums.
In line with Li Tang Gallery’s mission to provide exposure for emerging and established artists to audiences in the United States and China, “Fiction Beyond Nonfiction” brings together 15 phenomenal artists and artist groups who are challenging the understanding of art and technology. The pervasive nature of technology in our lives today inevitably impacts a wealth of localized and more significant global concerns. The selected artists view these notions through their unique lens, dissecting issues of sustainability, social justice, immigration, and providing voices for underrepresented or marginalized communities.
“We live in an era of rapid technological change, and it’s becoming easier for us to operate new technologies and tools. At the same time, our understanding of technology has become more and more superficial and fashionable. However, the emergence and the initial point of many technologies are far more profound and humanistic. Understanding the tools and techniques we use, respecting their logic and limitations, and seeking a novel application with humanities is the path I choose.”
– Nix Liu Xin, Mixed Reality Director and Designer (Guest Juror)
Technology is in a constant state of evolution, manipulation, and elevation, encompassing the turbulent nature of our modern age. Li Tang Gallery assembled a panel of guest jurors to choose a collection of artists who embodied this range of applications to create a broader commentary on society at large. The jury featured Jenny Guo, Nix Liu Xin, and Curry Sicong Tian.
“It is such an honor to be one of the jury in Li Tang sharing a mindful journey with the artists, a beauty without limitation and beyond definition, an embodiment of the coexistence of human and deity — where the boundary between human beings and artificial intelligence is blurred.”
– Curry Sicong Tian, Multidisciplinary Artist and Creative Director (Guest Juror)
Jenny Guo intersects the realms of art, technology, and entrepreneurship as an Emmy award-winning creative producer, co-founder of software companies LumiereVR and Highstreet, and experimental artist working with Virtual Reality (VR). Dismantling the boundaries of our physical and digital world, Nix Liu Xin brings his expertise as a mixed-reality artist, director, designer, and the Founder and Creative Director of studio Play.Work, to the “Fiction Beyond Nonfiction” exhibition. Curry Sicong Tian is a multidisciplinary artist and creative director for studios around the globe, bringing her creative fascinations in the field of film, digital art, and fashion to Li Tang Gallery.
Together, these three creative professionals channel their experience with the burgeoning fields of digital arts, with an acute understanding of the bridges and divides between eastern and western cultures, to create a cohesive commentary on what it means to embrace the digital, a more daunting task than anticipated. Over 300 artworks were submitted through Li Tang Gallery’s Open Call for this exhibition from all corners of the globe with a remarkable number of high-quality applicants. In the end, the jury was able to determine 15 artists and artist groups whose work created an intriguing array of mediums and a compelling narrative in line with the exhibition’s themes. The finalists selected for this show are Hallie Packard, Andrew Soria, Alex Sandulescu, Seb Agnew, Siwei Cai, Marta Di Francesco, Lulu Li, Rio Chen, Nenad Nedeljkov, Kasper Hesselbjerg, Jang Guin Lim, Gongjie Liu, Garuba Saheed, Delta NA, and Can Long.
Traditional mediums such as acrylics and ink are translated into a virtual format alongside mixed media works that integrate digital technology with tangible mediums. Curated by the artistic and creative professionals of the Li Tang Gallery team under the direction of Art Director Webson Ji, “Fiction Beyond Nonfiction” will be on view through Li Tang Gallery’s website Monday, May 30, 2022, through Sunday, July 31, 2022.
