Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) unveiled a decision on Monday that will ban transgender girls from utilizing feminine loos contained in the Capitol Constructing — drawing speedy criticism from Democratic Rep.-elect Sarah McBride, who would be the first overtly transgender member of Congress.
“Biological men do not belong in private women’s spaces. Period. Full stop. End of story,” Mace wrote on X, sharing her legislative proposal.
The decision requires a “prohibition” on Home members and staff from utilizing restrooms, altering rooms or locker rooms “other than those corresponding to the biological sex of such individuals” within the Capitol or in Home workplace buildings.
The invoice directs the Home sergeant-at-arms to implement the brand new measure, which Mace is in search of to connect to a Home guidelines bundle that shall be voted on early subsequent yr.
“Never thought this would have to happen,” Mace wrote in one other tweet, declaring that “protecting biological women starts here and it starts now.”
Her proposal comes weeks after Delaware voters elected Sarah McBride to symbolize the state’s at-large congressional district.
When she is sworn-in, McBride will turn out to be the primary overtly transgender member of Congress.
McBride, 34, slammed Mace’s decision as a distraction.
“Every day Americans go to work with people who have life journeys different than their own and engage with them respectfully, I hope members of Congress can muster that same kindness,” she wrote on X.
“This is a blatant attempt from far right-wing extremists to distract from the fact that they have no real solutions to what Americans are facing,” McBride added. “We should be focused on bringing down the cost of housing, health care, and child care, not manufacturing culture wars.”
“Delawareans sent me here to make the American dream more affordable and accessible and that’s what I’m focused on.”
