News that Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif), 90, was briefly hospitalized after a fall in her San Francisco home this week serves as yet another reminder of how Democrats are never afraid to put raw politics ahead of democracy.
Even as they pretend to champion it.
Feinstein clearly needs to be replaced — ASAP — for the benefit of her Californian constituents.
But her term isn’t up until January 2025, and many Dems aren’t pressuring her to step down sooner because they don’t want Gov. Gavin Newsom to appoint a temporary replacement of his choice.
That person (he vowed to pick a black woman) would have a leg up, as the incumbent, in the 2024 Democratic primary.
Instead, key Dems are looking to pave the way for Rep. Adam Schiff (the guy who told the biggest whoppers about Trump-Russia collusion) to succeed her, by forcing an open-seat primary.
Feinstein’s fall comes after a months-long absence from the Senate this spring as she suffered from shingles and other health problems.
She’s become increasingly dependent on her staff to direct her.
Recently, her daughter assumed power of attorney over her mother’s financial affairs.
Yet Democrats would rather deny voters proper representation than risk letting Newsom select someone who’d have an edge.
And they say they care about threats to democracy from Republicans?
