Raiders running back Josh Jacobs could miss preseason on contract issues

Josh Jacobs’ frustration over his contract with the Las Vegas Raiders is begging to boil over and could move him to sit out the entire preseason, perhaps longer. 

That was the impression that those involved in this weekend’s Zoom call of disgruntled NFL runnings had, according to NBC Sports.

Raiders’ veterans report to training camp on Tuesday, and Jacobs was already expected to sit out of camp due to the contract issue. 

The Raiders used the franchise tag on Jacobs during the offseason after declining the fifth-year option on his contract last year.

All of that has led to Jacobs growing increasingly angry with the franchise. 

Jacobs is coming off a season where he rushed for over 1,600 yards and warranted an increase in his pay.

The one-year tag would guarantee Jacobs $10.09 million this upcoming season, but he would be a free agent next year with no long-term security. 

The deadline for NFL teams to sign players that they placed the franchise tag on passed last Monday. 

Jacobs, among other NFL running backs, has been the victim of a changing mindset in the NFL of the value organizations place on the position.

That’s what led to Saturday’s Zoom call. 

But whether Jacobs plans on missing actual game checks in protest of what the Raiders have done with him is still unknown.

He would be missing out on $561,111 with each check, according to NBC Sports. 

That is if the Raiders don’t make the move to rescind his tender offer – which Jacobs still has not signed yet – and make him a free agent now.

Though it would be unclear what message that would send to the locker room and how players would take such a drastic move. 

Wide receiver Davante Adams told NFL All Access on Friday that if the Raiders are hoping to have a shot at a championship, they’ll need Jacobs. 

“If we really want to have a shot at winning the Super Bowl and having all the elite aspirations that we do, we’re gonna need that guy,” Adams said. “So I’m praying that we can still figure something out, but also understanding where Josh is coming from and trying to coach him through it at the same time.”

Time is quickly ticking away as the season gets closer and closer, and the preseason is just around the corner.

Las Vegas’ first preseason game is scheduled for Aug. 13 against the San Francisco 49ers.
