Seven people were killed Sunday and six others injured after a motorist allegedly ran them down near a migrant shelter in Brownsville, Texas, local authorities said.
The killings — which appeared to have been intentional — happened at about 8:30 a.m. in front of the Ozanam Center, which houses migrants and homeless people, according to ValleyCentral.com.
Authorities said the victims were waiting at a city bus stop outside the shelter.
Seven victims died at the scene, Lt. Martin Sandoval told the news station.
Another half dozen were brought to the hospital.
Authorities have brought the suspect — an unidentified man — to the hospital, where he is being checked for alcohol and drug use, according to ABC News.
He is being held under 24-hour guard watch, cops said.
Police have charged him with reckless driving, though they will likely file more charges, Sandoval said. Especially if the act was intentional.
A witness told the station that she was several bodies on the road, covered by shrouds. Women nearby were praying, she added.
Roads around the area have been closed, police said.
